Who is BullionByPost?

BullionByPost was founded in 2008 by Rob Halliday-Stein with just £10,000 of starting capital. The company trades as Jewellery Quarter Bullion Limited (Companies House No. 06758398) and is headquartered at Centre City Tower, Hill Street, Birmingham. They have grown into the UK’s largest online bullion dealer by volume, processing over 1.3 million orders.

The company is a full member of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), the international body that sets standards for the global precious metals market. This membership requires meeting strict criteria around business conduct, compliance, and financial standing.

BullionByPost also owns Gold.co.uk, which operates as a separate premium bullion service under the Goldco Limited entity, with Brink’s vault storage as its differentiator.

Our website walkthrough

The BullionByPost website makes a strong first impression. The homepage opens with a rotating hero banner - when we visited, it was promoting CGT-free gold and silver coins - followed immediately by a live gold and silver price ticker showing prices in GBP, USD, and EUR, updated throughout the day.

The top bar is packed with trust signals: “Free Insured Delivery”, “Rated Excellent by our customers” (linking to Trustpilot), “Pay Securely Online” with payment method icons, and “Member of the LBMA” with a blue shield logo. The phone number (0121 634 8060) is prominently displayed, which is reassuring for a site handling high-value transactions.

Navigation is clean and well-organised. The main menu runs across the top - Buy Gold & Silver, Sell Gold & Silver, Vault Storage, VAT-Free Storage, Pensions, Knowledge Base, Market News, Price Charts - while a detailed left sidebar on category pages breaks products down by type and size. You can reach a 1oz Gold Britannia in two or three clicks from the homepage.

Product pages are where BullionByPost really shines. Each page features high-resolution studio photography, a detailed quantity pricing table (showing per-unit discounts from 1 to 1,000+ units), clear VAT and CGT status indicators, full product specifications (weight, fineness, dimensions), and a customer review section. We found 403 reviews on the Britannia page alone, with links to the broader 18,000+ Trustpilot profile.

One minor irritation: prices update in real-time based on spot, so the figure you see can shift by the time you reach checkout. This is standard across bullion dealers, but can be disconcerting for first-time buyers.

The site also includes an investment calculator where you enter a budget and it suggests products, plus a section for sell-back quotes.

Gold range and pricing

BullionByPost has the widest gold product range of any UK online dealer. Categories include:

  • Gold coins - Britannias (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz), Sovereigns (full, half, double), Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs, Austrian Philharmonics, American Eagles, Australian Kangaroos, Chinese Pandas
  • Gold bars - From 1g to 1kg, sourced from LBMA-approved refiners including PAMP Suisse, Metalor, Umicore, Heraeus, and The Royal Mint
  • Collector and proof coins - Limited editions, proof sets, commemorative issues

Pricing is displayed live with quantity discounts. As a rough guide, premiums over spot at the time of our review were:

ProductTypical premium
Gold bars (100g+)2–3%
Gold bars (1g–50g)3–5%
1oz Britannia / Sovereign3–5%
Fractional coins (1/4oz, 1/10oz)5–8%
Collector / proof coins10–30%+

BullionByPost offers a price match guarantee against UK competitors on equivalent in-stock products, which keeps their pricing honest.

Silver range and pricing

Silver gets equal billing on the site. The range includes Silver Britannias (including CGT-free options), fractional silver Britannias, Canadian Maple Leafs, Austrian Philharmonics, silver bars from 1oz to 1kg, and silver coin sets.

Key things to note about silver at BullionByPost:

  • CGT-free silver coins are prominently highlighted - Silver Britannias and certain other UK legal tender silver coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax
  • VAT applies to most silver products (20%), though BullionByPost offers VAT-free storage options for silver held in their vault
  • No dedicated pre-owned section - unlike Atkinsons, BullionByPost focuses on new, mint-condition silver. If you are looking for lower premiums on pre-owned silver, Atkinsons may be a better option

Platinum and palladium

BullionByPost also sells platinum bars and coins, and palladium bars. These are listed in the left sidebar under their own categories. The range is smaller than gold and silver but covers the main sizes and products.

Delivery and packaging

Delivery is one of BullionByPost’s strongest features:

  • Free insured delivery on all orders above a low threshold
  • Next-day delivery on most orders (we found reports of consistent next-day arrival)
  • Packages are sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery or secure courier depending on value
  • Discreet packaging - plain outer box with no branding or indication of contents
  • Items are well-protected inside with tamper-evident seals. Coins arrive in capsules or tubes, bars in sealed assay cards
  • A signature is required on receipt
  • Full insurance from warehouse to your door at no extra cost

Once you sign for the delivery, the gold becomes your responsibility - so having a storage plan in place before ordering is essential.

Storage options

BullionByPost offers vault storage as an alternative to home delivery:

  • Brink’s vault storage in LBMA-approved facilities
  • Free for the first 6 months for new customers (at time of writing)
  • £10 per month ongoing fee after the introductory period
  • All stored bullion is fully allocated and individually segregated
  • Independent auditing by Rödl & Partner
  • Physical delivery available on request from the vault

The vault storage option is particularly useful for silver, as it allows you to hold silver VAT-free - the 20% VAT is deferred until you take physical delivery.

Customer service

Contact options include:

We did not observe a live chat feature during our visit. Phone support is clearly the primary contact channel, which suits the type of considered, high-value purchase that bullion represents.

What other customers say

BullionByPost has one of the strongest review profiles of any UK retailer in any sector:

Common themes in positive reviews include fast delivery, secure packaging, competitive pricing, and straightforward customer service. The most common complaints relate to the website occasionally being slow during high-demand periods and premiums rising during market volatility - both of which are common across the industry.

The sheer volume of reviews (55,000+ combined) is significant. It is very difficult to maintain a 4.8+ rating at that scale without genuinely consistent service.

Pros
  • Widest product range of any UK online dealer
  • Free insured delivery with consistently fast arrival
  • Live pricing with quantity discounts clearly displayed
  • Price match guarantee keeps premiums competitive
  • 55,000+ verified reviews across Trustpilot and eKomi
  • LBMA full membership adds credibility
  • Vault storage option with VAT-free silver
  • Comprehensive buy-back service
Cons
  • No dedicated pre-owned section (Atkinsons is better here)
  • Premiums can spike during high-demand periods
  • Website can be slow during market volatility
  • No physical showroom for viewing products
  • Phone support only during business hours (no live chat)

Final verdict

BullionByPost is the UK’s default choice for buying physical gold and silver, and deservedly so. The combination of the widest product range, competitive pricing with a price match guarantee, free insured delivery, and an extraordinary volume of positive customer reviews makes them difficult to beat for most buyers.

They are not the cheapest on every product - Atkinsons’ pre-owned section can undercut them, and BullionVault offers lower fees for vaulted gold. But for the typical buyer who wants to browse a comprehensive catalogue, buy at a fair price, and have insured gold delivered to their door, BullionByPost is the obvious starting point.
