Who is Atkinsons Bullion?

Atkinsons Bullion traces its roots back to July 1990, when the family business began trading as Atkinsons Jewellery, Bullion & Coins. The current entity, Atkinsons Bullion & Coins Limited, was incorporated on 3 August 2015 (Companies House No. 09713549), with an earlier entity, Atkinsons Bullion Limited (No. 08433024), preceding it. The company trades as C&C Jewellery Ltd T/A Atkinsons Bullion & Coins and is registered at 3rd Floor, 86–90 Paul Street, London, EC2A 4NE. Their VAT number is 855 573 101.

Atkinsons is an Affiliate Member of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), the international body that sets standards for the global precious metals market. In April 2023, A-Mark Precious Metals - one of the world’s largest full-service precious metals companies - took a minority investment in Atkinsons, adding a layer of institutional backing to the family-run operation.

Despite the London registered address, the business retains strong Birmingham roots. The prominently displayed phone number (0121 355 0620) is a Birmingham area code, and the footer features accreditations from the Assay Office Birmingham, alongside Metalor, The Royal Mint, the LBMA, and Brink’s.

Our website walkthrough

The Atkinsons website makes a clean, professional first impression. The design uses a distinctive brown and burgundy colour scheme that sets it apart from the blue-and-white look favoured by most competitors. It feels understated and confident rather than flashy.

The header immediately shows live gold and silver prices (£3,815.16/t oz for gold and £31.78/t oz for silver when we visited), with Trustpilot widget displaying 4.9/5 from 24,008 reviews visible without scrolling. The phone number is prominently placed in the top bar - a small but meaningful trust signal for high-value transactions.

Navigation is well-organised: Gold, Silver, Pre-Owned, Sell to Us, Storage, Price Charts, and Resources. The standout here is Pre-Owned as a top-level navigation item - not buried in a submenu or tagged as an afterthought, but given equal weight alongside Gold and Silver. This tells you immediately where Atkinsons has chosen to differentiate.

The homepage also features a “Back in Stock” section highlighting recently replenished items, and an Instagram feed integration showing recent posts - small touches that make the site feel alive and actively maintained.

The pre-owned section in detail

Clicking Pre-Owned opens what is effectively a second catalogue. At the time of our visit, there were 177+ items across pre-owned gold coins, dated Sovereigns, pre-owned silver coins, and pre-owned silver bars.

The dated Sovereigns collection is particularly impressive. Rather than generic “pre-owned Sovereign” listings, Atkinsons breaks them down by monarch - Victoria, Edward VII, George V - giving collectors the ability to buy specific historical pieces at bullion-adjacent prices. A pre-owned Sovereign was listed from £936 compared to £1,000+ for a newly minted equivalent, representing a genuine 5–10% saving for identical gold content.

Each pre-owned product page includes VAT Free and CGT Free badges where applicable, high-resolution images with zoom functionality, full specifications, and the same quantity pricing tables as new items. The site makes clear that pre-owned items are sold under the VAT Margin Scheme, where VAT is calculated only on the dealer’s margin rather than the full sale price - this is what enables the lower pricing compared to new stock.

Filtering and product pages

The site offers an extensive filtering system across all categories. You can filter by weight, brand, design, monarch, metal, type, country, price range, and year. For anyone searching for a specific dated Sovereign or a particular refiner’s bar, this is genuinely useful.

Product pages feature multiple image angles with zoom, quantity pricing tables with tiers (1, 2–4, 5–9, 10–24, 25+), clear VAT and CGT status badges, and a Vaultor storage integration option. The product photography is clean and consistent throughout, including on pre-owned items.

Gold range and pricing

Atkinsons’ gold range covers both newly minted and pre-owned products:

  • Gold coins - Britannias (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz), Sovereigns (full, half, quarter), Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs, Austrian Philharmonics, and more
  • Gold bars - From 1g to 1kg, sourced from LBMA-approved refiners including Metalor, PAMP Suisse, Heraeus, and Umicore
  • Pre-owned gold coins - Sovereigns, Britannias, Krugerrands, and other popular coins at 5–10% below new pricing
  • Dated Sovereigns - Victoria, Edward VII, George V, and other monarchs, for collectors who want specific years

Pricing is live and updates throughout the day. As a rough guide at the time of our review:

ProductTypical premium
Gold bars (100g+)2–3%
Gold bars (1g–50g)3–5%
1oz Britannia / Sovereign (new)3–5%
Pre-owned Sovereign2–4%
Pre-owned Britannia2–4%
Fractional coins (1/4oz, 1/10oz)5–8%

The pre-owned gold range is where Atkinsons genuinely stands out. You get the same gold content, the same CGT-free status (on UK legal tender coins), and typically pay 5–10% less than new equivalents. The trade-off is cosmetic - pre-owned coins may show light wear - but for investment purposes, the gold content is what matters.

Silver range and pricing

Atkinsons offers a comprehensive silver range including:

  • Silver coins - Britannias, Maple Leafs, Philharmonics, and other international coins
  • Silver bars - From 1oz to 1kg, various refiners
  • Pre-owned silver coins - Including VAT-free Silver Britannias under the VAT Margin Scheme
  • Pre-owned silver bars - Various sizes, also available VAT-free

Key things to note about silver at Atkinsons:

  • CGT-free silver coins are clearly marked - Silver Britannias and other UK legal tender silver coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax
  • Pre-owned silver is VAT-free under the VAT Margin Scheme - this is a significant advantage. New silver carries 20% VAT, so pre-owned silver from Atkinsons can be substantially cheaper. Pre-owned Silver Britannias were listed from around £84 at the time of our visit
  • VAT Free badges are prominently displayed on eligible products, making it easy to identify the best value

For silver buyers specifically, Atkinsons’ pre-owned section is arguably even more valuable than for gold, because the VAT saving on silver is proportionally much larger.

Pre-owned and secondary market

This deserves its own section because it is Atkinsons’ defining feature.

Most UK bullion dealers sell pre-owned items occasionally or mix them into their main catalogue without fanfare. Atkinsons has done something different: they have built a dedicated, searchable, filterable pre-owned section with 177+ items, given it top-level navigation, and made it a core part of their business proposition.

Why does this matter for buyers?

  1. Lower prices - Pre-owned items are typically 5–10% cheaper than new equivalents. A pre-owned Sovereign at £936 versus a new one at £1,000+ is a meaningful saving, especially if you are buying in quantity
  2. VAT Margin Scheme - Pre-owned items qualify for the VAT Margin Scheme, where VAT is charged only on the dealer’s margin rather than the full sale price. This is especially beneficial for silver, where the standard 20% VAT on new items significantly inflates the price
  3. Identical investment value - A pre-owned 1oz gold Britannia contains exactly the same amount of gold as a new one. When you sell it back, the buy-back price is based on gold content, not whether it was bought new or pre-owned
  4. Historical interest - Dated Sovereigns from specific monarchs and years add a collecting dimension that new bullion cannot offer

The pre-owned section is regularly refreshed, and the “Back in Stock” feature on the homepage highlights recent additions. Stock can move quickly on popular items, so regular checking is worthwhile.

Delivery and packaging

Delivery is straightforward and generous:

  • Free fully insured delivery on all UK orders
  • Packages dispatched via Royal Mail Special Delivery or secure courier
  • Full tracking on all shipments
  • Discreet packaging with no branding or indication of contents
  • A signature is required on receipt
  • Full insurance from dispatch to your door at no extra cost

Free delivery on all orders - without a high minimum threshold - is a competitive advantage, particularly for buyers building a position gradually with smaller, regular purchases.

Storage options

Atkinsons offers vault storage through Vaultor, which is integrated directly into product pages. When browsing a product, you can choose to have it delivered to you or sent to Vaultor storage.

This integration means you can mix and match - take delivery of some items while storing others - without needing to manage a separate account or relationship. For silver in particular, vault storage allows you to defer VAT until you take physical delivery, which can represent a meaningful saving.

What other customers say

Atkinsons has the strongest review profile of any UK bullion dealer by both rating and volume:

Common themes in positive reviews include fast delivery, excellent packaging, competitive pricing (especially on pre-owned items), and friendly, knowledgeable customer service. Multiple reviewers specifically praise the pre-owned section and the savings it offers.

The most common complaints relate to occasional stock shortages on popular pre-owned items and the website being slow during peak market activity - both of which are common across the industry.

Maintaining a 4.9/5 rating across 22,800+ reviews is exceptional. For context, this is the highest rating and the largest review count of any UK bullion dealer on Trustpilot.

Final verdict

Atkinsons Bullion has carved out a genuinely distinctive position in the UK bullion market. While other dealers compete on range or price matching, Atkinsons has built the UK’s best pre-owned bullion section - and it shows. The 5–10% savings on pre-owned gold, the VAT Margin Scheme benefits on pre-owned silver, and the curated dated Sovereigns collection give value-focused buyers a reason to choose Atkinsons over anyone else.

The numbers back this up. A 4.9/5 Trustpilot rating from 22,800+ reviews is not just the highest of any UK bullion dealer - it is exceptional by any retail standard. Combined with 35+ years of family heritage and the backing of A-Mark Precious Metals, Atkinsons offers a rare combination of value and trust.

If you are buying new, mint-condition bullion and want the broadest possible catalogue, BullionByPost remains the default choice. But if you want to pay less for the same gold content and do not mind cosmetic wear, Atkinsons’ pre-owned section is where the smart money goes.
