Quick answer

Ten physically-backed silver ETCs trade on the London Stock Exchange and are available to UK investors through mainstream ISA and SIPP platforms. TERs range from 0.19% to 0.49%. Because UK investors pay 20% VAT on physical silver, silver ETCs are a common route to silver exposure without the VAT cost — but they introduce counterparty exposure to the issuer and custodian, and gains are subject to Capital Gains Tax unless held within an ISA or SIPP.

How we test & rank

For each product this page records: LSE ticker, total expense ratio (TER), structure, vault location, and a link to the provider's own factsheet. No score, ranking or "best of" judgement is applied. UK-listed ETCs are controlled investments — consult a regulated adviser if you need a personal recommendation.

Summary

This page is a factual product reference, not investment advice or a financial promotion. Read each provider's factsheet and KIID before investing. Capital is at risk — the silver price can fall as well as rise, and silver is historically more volatile than gold.

Frequently asked questions

Do silver ETCs avoid VAT?

UK-listed silver ETCs are securities and are not themselves subject to VAT on purchase, in contrast to physical silver coins and bars, which carry 20% VAT in the UK. ETCs do, however, introduce counterparty exposure to the issuer and custodian, and gains are subject to Capital Gains Tax unless held within an ISA or SIPP.

Why are silver ETC TERs higher than gold ETC TERs?

Silver is bulkier and heavier per unit of value than gold, so storage, transport and insurance costs are higher. This is reflected in the typical TER difference — gold ETCs cluster around 0.12–0.22%, silver ETCs cluster around 0.19–0.49%.

Are silver ETCs eligible for ISAs and SIPPs?

Yes. UK-listed physically-backed silver ETCs are eligible for Stocks & Shares ISAs and SIPPs on major UK platforms. Eligibility on any specific platform is set by the platform — check before opening a position.

Is this page a recommendation?

No. This is a factual product reference. It does not rank, score or recommend any product, and it is not a financial promotion under section 21 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. If you want a personal recommendation, speak to a regulated financial adviser.
