Questions
What is the Gold Sovereign?
The Gold Sovereign is a 22 carat (916.7 fine) coin containing 7.32g of fine gold, with a nominal face value of £1. Sovereigns minted in 1837 or later are sterling legal tender and exempt from Capital Gains Tax; they qualify as investment gold, so no VAT applies.
How much gold is in a Gold Sovereign, and what is it worth?
It contains 7.32g of fine gold (0.2354 troy oz). Its melt value is that weight times the spot price; dealers sell above it and buy back below it. Gold price today.
How much will a dealer pay for a Gold Sovereign?
None of the dealers we measure has a current published buyback price for it. Some dealers buy without publishing a price and quote on request. Buyback prices for every product.
Do I pay Capital Gains Tax when I sell a Gold Sovereign?
No. It is UK legal tender, and gains on sterling currency aren't chargeable to Capital Gains Tax (TCGA 1992 s21(1)(b); HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78305). That holds however much profit you make. Capital Gains Tax guide.
Is there VAT on the Gold Sovereign?
No. It meets HMRC's definition of investment gold (VAT Notice 701/21: minimum fineness, legal tender or on HMRC's list, sold at no more than 180% of its gold value), so no VAT is charged. VAT guide.
Why do dealers charge different prices for the same coin?
Each dealer adds its own premium to the spot price to cover minting, handling and margin, and some charge for delivery. The gold inside is worth the same everywhere, so the premium and delivery are what you're really comparing. It is not returned when you sell. How dealer premiums work.
