# MetalsAlpha > MetalsAlpha tracks what UK buyers pay for physical gold and silver, and what they get back when they sell. Dealer prices, premiums over spot and buyback prices, measured every day. UK only. Prices in GBP. Contact: hello@metalsalpha.com. We don't earn commission from any dealer today. We may add affiliate links in future. If we do, every one will be marked, and they will never affect rankings. How we collect data and calculate rankings: https://www.metalsalpha.com/how-we-measure We have not placed test orders. Everything is measured from prices and terms dealers publish on their own websites, and from public records. ## Data - Product price pages (https://www.metalsalpha.com/prices): today's lowest dealer price, premium over spot, best buyback price and round-trip cost for 13 UK bullion products. Dealer pages are read every hour on weekdays, three times a day at weekends. - Buyback prices (https://www.metalsalpha.com/prices/buyback): the highest published price UK dealers pay to buy back each coin and bar, with its gap to melt value. - Spot prices (https://www.metalsalpha.com/prices/gold, /prices/silver, /prices/platinum, /prices/palladium): read every 10 minutes, cross-checked against a second source and the ECB daily exchange rate. - UK Bullion Premium Index (https://www.metalsalpha.com/premium-index): monthly summary of dealer premiums across a fixed product basket. RSS: https://www.metalsalpha.com/premium-index/feed.xml - Open data (https://www.metalsalpha.com/open-data): daily CSV, licensed CC BY 4.0. - Methodology (https://www.metalsalpha.com/how-we-measure): data sources, validation rules, and the ranking formula with weights. - Experiments (https://www.metalsalpha.com/experiments): questions about the cost of buying bullion answered daily from measured prices: the round trip, whether any buyback price exceeds another dealer's selling price, what the CGT exemption costs, and the small-coin tax. ## Current data (generated automatically) - No current readings available. Check the pages above for the latest. ## Dealer rankings - UK coin and bar dealers (https://www.metalsalpha.com/dealers): recomputed daily from measured data using the published formula. 11 dealers measured. - Vault and trading platforms are not covered. ## Key UK facts (tax year 2026/27, 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027; checked 6 October 2026) - Gold Sovereigns (minted 1837 or later) and gold Britannias are UK legal tender and are not chargeable to Capital Gains Tax, because sterling currency is exempt (TCGA 1992 s21(1)(b); HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78305). - Other UK legal tender coins, including silver Britannias, fall under the same sterling-currency rule (CG76881). HMRC's manual names gold Britannias and Sovereigns explicitly; silver follows from the same principle. - Foreign legal tender coins (e.g. Krugerrands, Maple Leafs) and gold and silver bars are chargeable to CGT. - Declaring to HMRC: buying gold is not declared. Selling exempt coins (Sovereigns, Britannias) needs no report. For bars and foreign coins, HMRC's Self Assessment notes (SA108, 2025-26) require the capital gains pages if chargeable gains exceed the annual exempt amount or chargeable assets sold were worth more than £50,000. - CGT annual exempt amount: £3,000. Rates: 18% on gains within the basic-rate band (£37,700), 24% above it. - Investment gold coins are VAT-exempt: minted after 1800, at least 900 fineness, legal tender in their country of origin, and normally sold at no more than 180% of their gold value, or on HMRC's list (VAT Notice 701/21A). Investment gold bars: at least 995 fineness. - Silver is subject to VAT at the standard rate (20%) when bought new for delivery. Prices on this site include it. ## Guides - Capital Gains Tax on gold and silver: https://www.metalsalpha.com/guides/capital-gains-tax-gold-silver-uk - VAT on gold and silver: https://www.metalsalpha.com/guides/vat-on-gold-silver-uk - How to buy gold in the UK: https://www.metalsalpha.com/guides/how-to-buy-gold-uk - How to buy silver in the UK: https://www.metalsalpha.com/guides/how-to-buy-silver-uk - How dealer premiums work: https://www.metalsalpha.com/guides/how-dealer-premiums-work - Selling gold and how buyback works: https://www.metalsalpha.com/guides/how-to-sell-gold-uk - Storing gold at home: https://www.metalsalpha.com/guides/storing-gold-at-home - How to spot fake gold: https://www.metalsalpha.com/guides/how-to-spot-fake-gold ## Policies - How we measure: https://www.metalsalpha.com/how-we-measure - Corrections: https://www.metalsalpha.com/corrections - Affiliate disclosure: https://www.metalsalpha.com/affiliate-disclosure - Privacy: https://www.metalsalpha.com/privacy MetalsAlpha does not cover ETFs, ETCs, mining shares, pensions or ISAs, and is not authorised by the FCA.
